The Hubble Telescope

NASA's Great Observatories Celebrate International Year of Astronomy

Hubble image of Messier 101                                       The Hubble Space Telescope compiled this image of the galaxy Messier 101 over the course of nine years, from March 1994 to January 2003. A trio of M101 images from Hubble, the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, will be released later this month as part of the International Year of Astronomy. Galileo first turned his telescope to the heavens in 1609, marking the dawn of modern astronomy. To commemorate 400 years of exploring the universe, 2009 has been designated the International Year of Astronomy.

In conjunction with Galileo's birthday on Feb. 15, NASA is releasing images from its Great Observatories -- the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory -- to more than 100 planetariums, museums, nature centers and schools across the country.

The selected sites will unveil a large 9-square-foot print of the spiral galaxy Messier 101 that combines the optical view of Hubble, the infrared view of Spitzer, and the X-ray view of Chandra into one multi-wavelength picture. "It's like using your eyes, night vision goggles and X-ray vision all at the same time," said Dr. Hashima Hasan, lead scientist for the International Year of Astronomy at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

The World Islands & Palm Islands in Dubai

The World Islands & Palm Islands in Dubai

world_islands

Ever wish the world was smaller? The World is a man-made archipelago of 300 islands in the shape of a world map. The World is being built primarily using sand dredged from the sea. Each island ranges from 23,000 m2 to 84,000 m2 (250,000–900,000 square feet or 5.7–21 acres) in size, with 50–100 m of water between each island. The development will cover an area of 9 km in length and 6 km in width, surrounded by an oval breakwater. The only means of transport between the islands will be by boat and helicopter. Prices for the islands will range from $15-45 million (USD). The average price for an island will be around $25 million (USD). Dredging started in 2004 and as of March of 2007 The World is around 90% complete. According to the National Geographic Channel (The Best of Megastructures) the overall price for the World is $14 Billion US Dollars.

1 = 2 IS THIS TRUE???

         1 = 1

Let    a = b

Now  a2 = b2 = ab

         a2 - b2 = a2 - ab

        (a+b)(a-b) = a(a-b)

         a+b = a

         a+a = a

CERN Launches The Biggest Computing Grid In The World

CERN Launches The Biggest Computing Grid In The World

Computer Center, CERN

Today, CERN launched the largest computing grid in the world which is destined to analyze the data coming from world’s biggest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The computing grid consists of more than 140 computers centers from around the world in order to be capable to analyze 15 million GB of LHC’s data.

A big contribution to CERN’s Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) is made by the United States which has “allocated” 15 universities and 3 Departments of Energy (DOE) from 11 states. In order to make things work, the US are using the Open Science Grid that already was coordinating the national computing infrastructure of science and from now it will coordinate WLCG’s data, and it will provide computing power for the LHC.

The U.S. has been an essential partner in the development of the vast distributed computing system that will allow 7,000 scientists around the world to analyze LHC data, complementing its crucial contributions to the construction of the LHC,” says Glen Crawford from the DOE’s Office of Science where he is a member of the High Energy Physics program.

Open Science Grid members have put an incredible amount of time and effort in developing a nationwide computing system that is already at work supporting America’s 1,200 LHC physicists and their colleagues from other sciences,” says Ruth Porder, Open Science Grid’s executive-director from DOE’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

Computer Center, CERN

It seems like particle physics projects are very important in developing better computing grids all around the world, not only in the U.S., but I will let Ed Seidel to explain it better - “particle physics projects such as the LHC have been a driving force for the development of worldwide computing grids.”

“The benefits from these grids are now being reaped in areas as diverse as mathematical modeling and drug discovery,” added Mr. Seidel, the director of the Office of Cyberinfrastructure at the National Science Foundation.

World’s biggest computing grid is using dedicated optical fiber networks to send the data from LHC to 11 so-called Tier-1 computer centers in Asia, Europa, and North America. The latter includes New York’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. These two are very important as they distribute the data from CERN’s LHC to about 140 Tier-2 computing centers worldwide.

“Our ability to manage data at this scale is the product of several years of intense testing. Today’s result demonstrates the excellent and successful collaboration we have enjoyed with countries all over the world. Without these international partnerships, such an achievement would be impossible,” says the leader of the WLCG project, Ian Bird.

Computer Center, CERN

“Grid computing allows university research groups at home and abroad to fully participate in the LHC project while fostering positive collaboration across different scientific departments on many campuses,” says Ken Bloom, manager of seven from the twelve Tier-2 computing centers in the U.S.

When the LHC starts running at full speed, it will produce enough data to fill about six CDs per second. As the first point of contact for LHC data in the United States, the computing centers at Brookhaven and Fermilab are responsible for storing and distributing a great amount of this data for use by scientists around the country. We’ve spent years ramping up to this point, and now, we’re excited to help uncover some of the numerous secrets nature is still hiding from us,” says Michael Ernst, director of the Tier-1 computing center from the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

All the data coming from the LHC will be examined by worldwide physicists including the United States, and they will be looking for “something” that could lead to important discoveries about the Universe. For the moment, there is only one problem - CERN has shut down the LHC due to serious problems caused by faulty connection between magnets.

Man On Mars By 2037

Missions to the moon and Mars, amid a renewal of global interest in space exploration, are at the top of the agenda for the 2,000 space scientists, astronauts, satellite manufacturers and launchers who gathered in Hyderabad.

NASA aims to put a man on Mars by 2037, the administrator of the US space agency indicated here Monday.

This year marks the half-century of the space age ushered in by the October 1957 launch of the Sputnik-1 by the then Soviet Union, NASA administrator Michael Griffin noted.

In 2057, the centenary of the space era, "we should be celebrating 20 years of man on Mars," Griffin told an international astronautics congress in this southern Indian city where he outlined NASA's future goals.

The international space station being built in orbit and targeted for completion by 2010 would provide a "toehold in space" from where humanity can travel first to the moon and then to Mars, Griffin said.

"We are looking at the moon and Mars to build a civilisation for tomorrow and after that," Griffin added in his remarks at a conference session attended by heads of the world's space agencies.

President George W. Bush in 2004 announced an ambitious plan for the US to return to the moon by 2020 and use it as a stepping stone for manned missions to Mars and beyond.

NASA's Phoenix spacecraft is scheduled to land on the northern plains of Mars next year to determine if the Red Planet could support life.

The agency's Mars rovers Opportunity and Spirit resumed their three-year-old mission this month after surviving giant dust storms that nearly destroyed the twin robots.

The rovers were placed in hibernation mode in July to save power because the dust storms were covering their solar panels, impeding their ability to absorb energy from the sun.

And on September 15, 10 gerbils took off from the Russian-run Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan for a 12-day voyage to test the possible effects of a human mission to Mars.

Missions to the moon and Mars, amid a renewal of global interest in space exploration, are at the top of the agenda for the 2,000 space scientists, astronauts, satellite manufacturers and launchers who gathered in Hyderabad.

NASA is due to start sending a series of robotic missions to the moon starting next year to prepare for future spaceflights and do research on the effects of extended space travel on human beings.

The World's Smallest Humanoid Robot

Would you like a miniature humanoid robot to imitate your daily activities?

The i-SOBOT is a toy robot that will perform your commands and is able to react in unpredictable, yet amusing ways. Its abilities vary from carrying your beer can to shooting an arrow and even shooting a handmade bazooka at a predetermined target. The amazing thing is its wonderful precision. If you watch those videos you will also notice that after it sets its aim, it looks away like a complete pro and will make William Tell cry “Uncle!”.

isobot

This 6.5 inch robot is remote controlled and also reacts to your programmed voice commands. The first time I saw the video, I laughed at this little thing. It actually seems as if the robot is craving some attention and in order to get it will do anything that may normally embarrass any of us.

I must say that it truly intrigues me to watch this funny new friend. It attempts Karate moves, plays basketball, and it can also dance, dance, dance.

You may read additional specification or even view some official demos at their site. If you are looking to get one of these for yourself, now you can own The World's Smallest Humanoid Robot.

Intel Unveils Metro, World's Thinnest Laptop, Almost Skinny

Lord have mercy, Intel has just created a laptop that's as pretty as a supermodel, and thinner, too. Codenamed the Intel Movile Metro Notebook , this prototype was designed by Intel along with Ziba Design, and it's a mere .7 inches thick and weighs just 2.25 pounds. It's no dumb blonde, either, packed with Intel's speediest and most efficient components, which will probably be plenty fast by the time this machine is manufactured, maybe even as soon as the end of this year.

This one has it all. The slim, champagne-colored magnesium notebook—which is only a quarter of an inch thicker than a Motorola RAZR cellphone—will include a magnetically attached folder that will be available in different fashion colors. That folder will also be able to charge up the laptop wirelessly, and ladies (at whom this design is clearly aimed) can attach a strap to it and make it look just like a purse. Jeez, what else did they include in this beauty?
